Joaquin Phoenix to play Edgar Allan Poe in The Beautiful Cigar Girl?

Here’s something pretty neat, if true. According to Oscar-winning sound recordist Resul Pookutty (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), nutty ol’ Joaquin Phoenix will be portraying Edgar Allan Poe in an adaptation of the book “The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder”. Pookutty (an awesome name that I might have to take for my own) has evidently signed on to work on the film’s sound, although a quick bit of searching doesn’t reveal anything else about the flick, like who is directing for instance.

Here’s the book’s synopsis: On July 28, 1841, the body of Mary Rogers, a twenty-year-old cigar girl, was found floating in the Hudson-and New York’s unregulated police force proved incapable of solving the crime. One year later, a struggling writer named Edgar Allan Poe decided to take on the case-and sent his fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, to solve the baffling murder of Mary Rogers in “The Mystery of Marie Roget.”

I’ll tell you what – this sounds a helluva lot more interesting than the proposed James McTeigue-directed thriller THE RAVEN (read more about that HERE). But since details are so scarce at the moment, let’s just file this as “wait and see”. (Let’s not forget that Phoenix supposedly “retired” from acting, although the dude is such a weirdo, anything is possible.)

To read what Pookutty had to say about his new job, head on over to the India Times.
