I guess you can make a musical about anything. This has been proven by the announcement in Variety that AMERICAN PSYCHO is getting the song-and-dance treatment. The notion was brought up in 2008, but now it’s really taking shape, with a creative team joining the venture in the form of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik, who will be writing the book and the songs, respectively.
Aguirre-Sacasa is a comic-book writer, playwright, and t.v. scribe who works on HBO’s “Big Love” (which coincidentally stars Chloe Sevigny, who of course was in 2000’s film adaptation of PSYCHO). Sheik was a pop-crooner in the 90s (remember “Barely Breathing”?!) and has moved on to Broadway, winning a Tony for his involvement in the musical “Spring Awakening”.
AMERICAN PSYCHO author Bret Easton Ellis is a consulting producer on the project. No timeline has been set for this oddity, but hopefully we’ll get some casting news in a few months. That is, if everyone still thinks it’s a good idea. (F*ck, I’d see it.)
