A movie I really appreciated as a kid was F/X. It almost certainly had something to do with the fact that I was a make-up/gore freak back in the day (I worshipped Tom Savini and Rick Baker; I’m sure I’m not alone there), and the concept of a dude who had to use his special effects skills to thwart criminals just seemed so awesome to me. For many, I’m sure it’s a “why didn’t I think of that?” idea.
It still IS a cool idea, actually, and maybe that’s why MGM is attempting to give it another go. I don’t have a big problem with this, if only because I’m curious how it would be handled. (More on this in a moment.) The studio is curious too – seems as though they can’t find the right script, and have been trying for years, according to Moviehole. The site reports: They’ve been a few writers on the project, and as yet, the studio hasn’t been explicitly happy with anything they’ve seen.
It’s kind of hard to imagine what a modern-day take on F/X would be like. When the original came out, special effects were more or less practical, so you had lots of gags with creatures and smoke machines, etc. Now, CGI dominates the land. What could you do with that in a scenario where the effects guy has to think on his feet? Unless of course they’re planning on just keeping it old-school, with props and make-up and such. I’m curious, that’s for sure, and until further notice, hold out hope that this project really gets going, if only so I can find out what direction they’re going with it…
