I honestly can’t think of a busier filmmaker currently at work than Guillermo Del Toro. Seriously, the dude at the moment has something like 15 projects in various stages of production (his duties on which range from producer, to writer, to director, respectively). But none may be bigger than the epic, Pete Jackson footstep-following journey known as THE HOBBIT.
Well, our boy Del Toro recently sat down and chopped it up with TotalFilm, and had some pretty interesting shit to say regarding his new walk through the Shire. In particular, Del Toro shared his intent to include more of Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellan returning), saying: “We will be integrating Gandalf’s comings and goings [into the script] because he does disappear in the book quite often,” adding, “So, as opposed to the book, we see where he goes and what happens to him.”
Sweet. I can dig Gandalf, no beef there.
As afar as the whole visual approach to the exotic creatures in the story-world of THE HOBBIT, Guillermo posits: “(In The Hobbit), the creatures speak: Smaug has beautiful lines of dialogue; the Great Goblin has beautiful lines of dialogue; many creatures do. So we had to design them with a different approach because you are not just designing things that are scary. I wanted the Wargs to have a certain beauty so that you don’t have a massively clear definition: what is beautiful is good and what is ugly is not.”
Damn! You know after the groundbreaking creatures in everything from PAN’S LABYRINTH to HELLBOY (1 & 2), Del Toro is fixing to up the ante this go around. Remember, larger shoes he couldn’t possibly fill.
