If it wasn’t official before, it sure is now: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (read my review HERE) is a hit. Big-time. For the second straight weekend, PARANORMAL sold out practically all of its midnight screenings across the country, a per-screen average of $16,000, culminating in a total gross of approx. $535,000. Not bad for a movie made for peanuts.
“The fans have spoken, and we are listening”, Paramount’s Rob Moore said. The studio has decided to expand the film’s release into over 40 markets on OCTOBER 9th, which will include all-day showtimes, instead of strictly midnight. It’s only natural to expect that the flick will continue to roll out throughout the month, and you’d better believe PARANORMAL will do blockbuster business during the Halloween weekend. (Halloween, as I’m sure you know, hits on a Saturday this year, which is great news for the spookfest.)
I guess the whole DEMAND IT! angle worked for Paramount, and the company is looking very smart for picking this one up well over a year ago. They’ve decided to scratch the remake, director Oren Peli has already moved on to a new project, and fans are discovering – and embracing – a simple, low-budget horror movie. There isn’t even any backlash yet… Everybody wins!
