Just a few days after Roman Polanski’s shocking arrest comes the news that writer-director Roger Avary has received one year of jail time for crashing his car and killing a passenger while driving drunk in 2008. Avary pleaded guilty in August, and will also serve five years of probation.

You’ll recall that it was recenty announced Avary would be scripting SILENT HILL 2 (he also wrote the first one); there’s no word on how the project will be effected by Avary’s incarceration, but of course that’s of little importance when it comes to a matter like this. It’s just a damn shame; many lives ruined by something that could have – should have – been avoided. There’s no defending drunk driving, and this is no different.

Avary of course won a Best Screenplay Oscar – along with Quesntin Tarantino – for 1994’s PULP FICTION. He also wrote and directed KILLING ZOE, THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, and co-wrote Robert Zemeckis’ BEOWULF with Neil Gaiman.
