No doubt attaining cult status with his 2001 debut effort DONNIE DARKO, writer/director Richard Kelly looks to return to such hallowed ground after the critically lambasted sophomore jinx SOUTHLAND TALES.
His new flick, THE BOX, based on the acclaimed Richard Matheson short-story “Button, Button” – finds a suburban couple fraught with fear once offered a deal of a lifetime.
Norma (Cameron Diaz) and Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) are faced with a moral quandary when a mysterious glass box turns up at their door. If they press the button inside the box, they’ll get enough money to save their ailing son, but in exchange, someone, somewhere in the world will die. When the temptation to save their beloved son becomes irrepressible, Norma pushes the button. A gunshot instantly rings out somewhere nearby. Consumed with guilt, Norma must do everything in her power to solve a murder she has knowingly caused.
Frank Langella, Gillian Jacobs, Michael Zegan, Celia Weston, Holmes Osborne, Debra Rush, Evelina Oboza (far below) and Basil Hoffman all costar.
