Wow here’s some news that sucks. Another highly anticipated flick has gone the way of THE WOLFMAN. I’m talking about SHUTTER ISLAND, and its sudden move out of its OCTOBER 2nd release date. Now it sits somewhere in FEBRUARY 2010. You’ll recall that THE WOLFMAN had owned a NOVEMBER date before moving to FEBRUARY 13th.
Why, you might ask… Well, according to Nikki Fink over at Deadline Hollywood Daily, the main culprit is money. From her blog: I hear that Paramount told the filmmakers it doesn’t have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market a big awards pic like this.
That’s not all. Apparently, another concern is that Leonardo Di Caprio won’t be able to promote the film internationally, most likely due to his other film commitments (of which there are about 8,000). You’d think a Martin Scorsese film would be able to promote itself – if only based on the magnificent trailer – but not in this day and age… The studio hopes that the flick will still be remembered come awards time next year, however.
One thing is certain: February is going to be a helluva month, with SHUTTER ISLAND, THE WOLFMAN, CABIN IN THE WOODS, and THE CRAZIES all coming out… Until, of course, one of them gets pushed back…
