In an article about Darren Aronofsky, today’s Hollywood Reporter reveals that the director may be close to dropping out of ROBOCOP, the remake he’s been attached to since last year. (Intriguingly, We wrote about ROBOCOP on July 15th, 2008: one year ago today. Eerie, man.). Reason for this seems to be his commitment to BLACK SWAN, the supernatural thriller he’s making with Natalie Portman. (Read our article about that project HERE.)
Those of you celebrating the end of a needless remake should hold your applause, however: MGM is still intent on making the film for a 2011 release, and is quietly reaching out to other directors in the event Aronofsky can’t commit to it. To read THR’s story on the matter, head on over HERE.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: The only director who could come close to Verhoeven’s wild mix of dark humor and sadistic violence is Takashi Miike. He’s the man for the job. Of course, there’s a better chance of Natalie Portman giving my face a lap dance than that happening, so I have no hope at all for this reboot. Still gonna wait for Natalie, though.
ROBOCOP’s current screenwriter, David Self, wrote ROAD TO PERDITION and THE HAUNTING, among other high-profile flicks.
