We all know Alexander Aja is on board for a PIRANHA remake (read our coverage of that here). But that won’t stop PIRANHA 2 producer Ovidio Assonitis from launching a new chapter in the killer fish franchise, to be called PIRANHA 3-D: THE INVISIBLE MENACE (cool, invisible piranhas in 3-D!!). Not only that, the man is gearing up to remake BEYOND THE DOOR (the 1974 Italian horror flick that he originally produced and co-directed) and DEMONS (the update of Lamberto Bava’s classic freakout will be called DEMONS UNDERGROUND), all done through his production company Koa Productions.
According to Dread Central, BEYOND THE DOOR will be shot between Chicago and Bangkok (?!), PIRAHNA 3-D, at a remote snow resort, while DEMONS UNDERGROUND will stay in Chicago.
Of the three, only DEMONS has any real relevance for me. It’s got some really wild stuff in it that I know can’t be replicated. Yet the premise (audience watching a freaky demon movie turns into freaky demons themselves; chaos ensues) has such potential for unrestrained, bloody lunacy that perhaps in the right hands, with the proper amount of respect, this new film will honor the original’s spirit and not crap all over it…
