2023 marks the forty-third anniversary of the release of the comedy classic Caddyshack, which starred Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray as characters who spend a lot of time at a country club that has a bit of a gopher problem. The mischievous, dancing gopher (and Chase) returned for a less-well-regarded sequel eight years later… and now writer/director Anthony Catanese is putting a horror twist on the concept with Caddy Hack! A trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above.

Caddy Hack will be premiering at Kevin Smith’s Smodcastle theatre in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey on August 11th. A Blu-ray, DVD, and digital release will follow in October, courtesy of Wild Eye Releasing.

The film tells the story of a struggling golf course that suffers a string of caddy murders at the paws of pesticide-mutated gophers while the greedy owner of the facility tries to cover up the carnage and an unhinged groundkeeper wages all out war on the vicious vermin.

Jim Gordon, Jake Foy, Chrissy Cavallo, Nick Twist, Ilene Sullivan, and John Evans star.

Catanese produced Caddy Hack (which is described as “Caddyshack by way of Gremlins“) with Sara Casey, Scott Miller, Jim Gordon, Joseph Kuzemka, and Rob Hauschild. Catanese’s previous directing credits include Sodomaniac, Girls Just Wanna Have Blood, some short films, and a whole lot of music videos. He also contributed to the horror anthologies Hi-Death and Hi-Fear.

I’m not familiar with Catanese’s other work, but he definitely has my attention with Caddy Hack. I have to admire a filmmaker who watches Caddyshack and thinks, “I should turn this into a horror comedy where there are a bunch of gophers on a bloodthirsty rampage.” I will definitely be watching Caddy Hack at some point down the line. I would love to see it at Smodcastle Cinemas, but I’ll have to settle for watching the home video release.
