Deadline reports that Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us, is set to develop a TV series based on the acclaimed RPG video game franchise Baldur’s Gate for HBO. Mazin will create, write, executive produce, and serve as the showrunner of the series, which will be a continuation of the games, not a retelling.

The Series Takes Place After Baldur’s Gate 3

Unlike The Last of Us, the Baldur’s Gate series won’t retell the story of the games. Instead, it will be a sequel set after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, the most recent game in the franchise. There will be new characters as well as old, as they deal with the aftermath of the events of the third game. Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge success, earning rave reviews and selling over 20 million copies. Mazin is also a huge fan.

After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said in a statement. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.

Francesca Orsi, EVP, Head of HBO Drama Programming, added, “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate. His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.” Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano will executive produce alongside Mazin. Chris Perkins, former senior story designer for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast, will serve as a consultant.

The report adds that Mazin plans to approach Baldur’s Gate 3 cast members with ideas for their participation in the TV adaptation.

What do you hope to see in the Baldur’s Gate TV series?
