One of Netflix‘s most entertaining thrillers is coming to an end. According to multiple reports, The Night Agent, starring Gabriel Basso, will conclude after its upcoming fourth season. Rumors about the show’s cancellation have circulated for weeks, and now its fate is sealed just as production for Season 4 kicks off in Los Angeles.
The Night Agent came out swinging following its 2023 debut, when it landed on Netflix’s Most Popular English series list, where it remained for three years. Still, viewership began to wane in Season 2 and 3, though not due to a lack of quality. Analysts indicate that interest in The Night Agent remained strong, which is why the show got picked up for a fourth and final season.
In Season 1 of The Night Agent, Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland, a low-level F.B.I. agent who works in the basement of the White House, operating an emergency hotline for American spies. When a call comes in from a terrified civilian, Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), Peter must protect Rose and work with her to uncover the conspiracy threatening to rock the nation. The show evolved from there, with Rose returning to aid Sutherland in a variety of high-profile missions for the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, the synopsis for Season 3 reads: “Coming off the explosive events of Season Two, Night Agent Peter Sutherland is called in to track down a young Treasury Agent who fled to Istanbul with sensitive government intel after killing his boss. This kicks off a sequence of events where Peter investigates a dark money network while avoiding its paid assassins, while putting him on a collision course with a relentless journalist. Working together, they uncover buried secrets and old grudges that threaten to bring the government to its knees — and get them both killed in the process.”
Thankfully, because Netflix decided to end The Night Agent early in the production process for Season 4, fans can expect a proper ending to the series instead of an infuriating cliffhanger.
The Night Agent showrunner comments on the show’s cancellation
“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” creator, EP and showrunner Shawn Ryan said. “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
