Little House on the Prairie isn’t the only Michael Landon series getting the reboot treatment, as Fox Entertainment Studios has given a series order to a reboot of Highway to Heaven. The original fantasy drama series aired from 1984-89 and found Landon playing Jonathan Smith, an angel sent to Earth to help people in need. Victor French also starred as Mark Gordon, a retired policeman who travels with Smith.
Highway to Heaven Reboot
Much like the original, the reboot will tell uplifting, emotional stories and explore themes of compassion, humanity, and second chances, while putting its own spin on the premise of a “probationary angel” sent to Earth to earn his wings by helping people in need.
Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) will be the showrunner on the reboot. “I’m excited by the challenge of putting a contemporary lens on this classic tale,” he said in a statement. “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me — and fun. I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man.“
Amblin Television and Michael Landon Productions are involved in the reboot, which is being developed for the 2027-28 season.
Cindy Landon, Michael Landon’s widow and executive producer on the reboot, said, “Highway to Heaven has always been about connection, compassion and the idea that small acts can have big ripple effects and make a lasting difference. I’m proud to help carry Michael’s legacy forward with partners like Fox and Amblin, who understand the heart of this series and are bringing it to a new generation at just the right moment.“
Little House on the Prairie
Last year, Netflix ordered a reboot of Little House on the Prairie, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories and made popular by the acclaimed ’70s TV series starring Landon. The official logline for the new series reads: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical ‘Little House’ books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.” The first season will debut on July 9, and the streaming service has already renewed the series for a second season.
Although Little House on the Prairie is one of my favourites, I didn’t quite connect the same way with Highway to Heaven. That said, I’ll be giving the reboot(s) a chance.
