Nicolas Winding Refn isn’t someone I would think of when it comes to comic-book movies, but the director revealed at Cannes that he would love to make a Batgirl movie for DC Studios. That would be something.

Nicolas Winding Refn on Batgirl

I would love to do Batgirl,” he said. “Because Wonder Woman is done, that one I thought was super heavy.

What is it that Refn loves about Batgirl? “The costumes, I love the aesthetics,” he said. “A lot of Her Private Hell is my obsession with dolls, objects and how to move people around in space and time. I loved the objectification of objects, and superheroes and comic-books and that whole sub-culture. It’s where I come from. I collect Japanese toys, I play with Legos…

However, Refn added, “I don’t know if I’ll make an actual IP.” It can be hard for directors with a distinctive voice to fit into the superhero movie mould. More often than not, it ends prematurely due to those dreaded creative differences, or the final product no longer feels like theirs. That said, it can happen, with directors like Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, and more successfully bringing their style to comic-book movies.

The Last Batgirl Movie

Of course, a Batgirl movie has already been made… we just never got to see it. Bad Boys: Ride of Die directors Adil El Abri and Bilall Fallah had helmed a Batgirl movie starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Batman. But as we know, Warner Bros. scrapped the film for the tax write-off, despite it being nearly complete.

Her Private Hell

Her Private Hell, Refn’s first new movie in a decade, has debuted at Cannes. The logline reads: “As a strange mist engulfs a futuristic metropolis and unleashes an elusive, deadly presence, a troubled young woman sets out in search of her father. In this quest, her fate crosses with that of an American GI engaged in a desperate journey to snatch his daughter from Hell.” The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu, and Dougray Scott. It will hit theaters on July 24.
