Maggie Gyllenhaal is setting up her next project following the disappointing release of The Bride!, as she will reteam with Warner Bros. to adapt Creation Lake, a novel by Rachel Kushner.

The novel tells the story of “a spy who disrupts a farming collective in France only to develop second thoughts about her life.” The project is being described as tackling ideas of “activism, paranoia, and nihilism in the form of a philosophical thriller.“
The studio acquired the novel for Gyllenhaal to write and develop as a directing vehicle. She would also produce. The novel was quite acclaimed upon its release in 2024, landing on many lists of the best books of the year by The New York Times, The Atlantic, and others.
The Bride!
The Bride! was a big swing for Warner Bros., and unfortunately, it didn’t pay off. Despite the buzz, the film flopped, grossing just $24 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. Although the film was certainly a bit of a mess more often than not, it was quite ambitious and definitely not boring.
The film stars Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself,” reads the official synopsis. “The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.“
In his review, our own Chris Bumbray wrote, “Much has been written about how the theatrical cut of The Bride took some time to come together, and it has the feel of a movie that’s been edited down. It’s uneven, at times frustratingly bad, but then at others it’s absolutely riveting. Regardless of whether or not The Bride goes down as a failure or a success (it will almost certainly become a cult movie), there’s no denying that Gyllenhaal has serious chops behind the camera and is a rising talent as a director.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
