It was reported that last month, singer Bonnie Tyler had been placed in a medically induced coma while at her stay in a Portuguese hospital for emergency surgery with a perforated intestine. The surgery was said to have been successful and she had come out of the coma, but her condition would still worsen. Doctors were forced to put her on a ventilator as her health continued to decrease. The doctors were predicting a slow recovery for her, which meant that her planned tour for this summer had been canceled.

According to Deadline, her family would make the announcement that Tyler had passed away following her health complications. The Welsh singer was 75 years old. Her family posted a statement on her website that said,

Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.

We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

Her website would receive an overwhelming amount of traffic from fans who wanted to pay their respects and show love and support to the family. So much traffic had come through that her website is now down.

The Welsh-born Tyler was not only a singer, but a songwriter. Before she adopted her stage moniker, her birth name was Gaynor Sullivan. She would break out in 1977 with the album The World Starts Tonight and its singles “Lost in France” and “More Than a Lover”. Her 1977 single “It’s a Heartache” reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In the 1980s, Tyler exploded on the rock scene with her biggest hits, which include “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” The latter single was used for popular sequences in beloved 80s movies like Footloose and Short Circuit 2. She also had the hit single “Here She Comes” used in a 1984 pop restoration of the 1920s film Metropolis.

Tyler’s music sold for millions upon millions of copies and the artist would garner three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations, twice for British Female Solo Artist, amongst more acclaim. In 2022, Tyler would be awarded an MBE the Queen’s Birthday Honours in reflection of her success in the music world.
