The X-Men reboot at Marvel Studios is finally casting, with Deadline revealing that genre favorite Samara Weaving will be playing Emma Frost. The role is thought to be pivotal to the new film, which is set to be directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts). The character is one of the most important in the X-Men saga, beginning as a supervillain before eventually joining the team and becoming one of its leaders.
According to the report, Marvel had been testing numerous actresses for the role, which is considered one of the most important in the reboot. Samara Weaving is already a fan favorite, having starred in both Ready or Not films. Beloved by horror fans, she has also demonstrated considerable action chops throughout her career, making her a natural fit for the part. Emma Frost was previously played by January Jones in X-Men: First Class, where she served as one of the film’s antagonists.
The casting comes hot on the heels of two other major pieces of Marvel news that dropped at Comic-Con, with Ryan Gosling announced as the star of the next Ghost Rider movie (due in 2028), while David Jonsson will play Black Panther in Ryan Coogler’s third film in the franchise, which is set for release on December 15th, 2028. X-Men doesn’t have a release date yet, although many believe it has a strong chance of arriving in 2028.
Weaving’s casting coincides with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is currently breaking box office records. Disney’s D23 takes place in Anaheim from August 14th–16th, and it’s likely even more cast members will be officially announced there. All of this comes at a time of rebuilding for the MCU, with hopes that Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18th, will reinvigorate interest in the franchise after a string of underwhelming box office performers.
