Hulu has renewed Furious for a second season, with the announcement coming just before the finale of the first season. The thriller series stars Emmy Rossum as an FBI agent on the hunt for a female serial killer.

All About Furious

The series was created by Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl) and loosely inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow by Ronald Bass. It follows “FBI agent Alice Black (Rossum) on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer (Lola Petticrew). Both walk their paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.

Furious has been a big success for Hulu, with viewership growing week over week since it premiered last month. The finale will debut on August 31. The second season is still early in development, but it will likely follow Rossum’s character on a new cast.

It’s very loosely based on the 1987 movie Black Widow,” Meriwether told THR. “Emmy had wanted to make that into a show, and I was excited about doing something completely different and exploring a female serial killer. I love serial killer shows, but I’d never seen one with a female serial killer other than Killing Eve.

She continued, “I wanted to dive into that character and this seemed like a good framework. This sounds insane, but the more I learned about female serial killers, the more I was drawn in  — especially learning that most female serial killers have been victims of violence. That idea began forming in my head, just the cycle of violence and how misunderstood it is when it comes to women.

What We Thought

In his review, our own Alex Maidy said, “Furious is a balanced mix of thriller, procedural, and drama, with a dose of humor. I would be reluctant to say I enjoyed this series, as the subject matter is pretty repugnant, but it is handled well from script to screen, with a solid cast anchoring the whole season. By the halfway mark of the season, you will question whether you like the good guys or the antagonist, but you will not be able to stop watching until you find out the resolution to this tale in the final chapter.
