The Apology Tour Extended
The 1986 animated film Transformers: The Movie has been re-released into theaters and its run is definitely more than meets the eye. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that The Apology Tour for the movie has become Fathom Events’ third highest-grossing title in 2026, behind The Amazing Digital Circus and the rerelease of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. According to THR, The Apology Tour re-release of the film surpassed what was initially projected and the remastered 4K animated film would rank No. 7 on the weekend domestic chart with $3.1 million from 1,454 North American locations. It has also crossed $5 million globally as of Tuesday.
The movie’s theatrical run was originally planned to end on September 21, but after this success, hundreds of theaters are now reportedly extending screenings all the way through to October 7.
Fathom Entertainment vp of marketing Shannah Miller told THR, “We’re thrilled at Fathom, but we also had high expectations. This has been an extraordinary partnership with Hasbro. They kicked off the Apology Tour in honor of the 40th anniversary of the film, which also then means the early death of Optimus Prime, 26 minutes into the film.”
The Last Peter Cullen Project
Peter Cullen‘s recent passing is likely to have had an effect on sales and screenings of the re-release would also feature a brand new Transformers short, which had ultimately become Cullen’s last performance as Optimus Prime. Fathom Entertainment said the 12-minute short will follow the storyline of the original film and serve as a “love letter to the Transformers community and the late Peter Cullen.” The short also features the voice of Frank Welker, who returns as Megatron and Soundwave.
“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other.” Welker said in a statement. “After all, one needs the perfect hero against the epitome of evil to create great drama. Peter’s portrayal of Prime was born of his own personal beliefs; honesty, loyalty, and always insisting on doing the right thing. This made it easy to be friends. Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story opposite Peter’s Optimus in ‘Optimus Prime: Awakening’ was a real gift. I will miss my friend, but that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime.“
