Robopocalypse, the sci-fi project that was too big for Steven Spielberg, is back in the works, but this time… it’ll be a TV series.

Robopocalypse TV Series

According to THR, Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road are developing a Robopocalypse TV series based on the book by Daniel H. Wilson.

Ron Howard will direct the pilot, with Akiva Goldsman writing the pilot and serving as showrunner. The project doesn’t have a network or streaming service attached yet.

The logline reads: “Not far into our future, the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us. At Zero Hour—the moment the robots attack—the human race is almost annihilated, but as its scattered remnants regroup, humanity for the first time unites in a determined effort to fight back. Brilliantly conceived and amazingly detailed, Robopocalypse is an action-packed epic with chilling implications about the real technology that surrounds us.“

In a statement, Howard said, “Robopocalypse has all the scale and suspense of a major action story, but what drew me to it are the thought-provoking themes and humanity at its center. Daniel created a future that feels both startling and increasingly plausible, with characters who must figure out what connects us when the technology we rely on turns against us. I am also thrilled to work with Akiva again. We have shared some incredibly meaningful creative experiences, and this feels like the right story to bring us back together.”

Steven Spielberg Abandoned The Movie

Spielberg, who will executive produce the TV series, was slated to direct a Robopocalypse movie over a decade ago. Despite several years of development, Spielberg realized it would have been far too expensive to make.

“It was gargantuan. It was a company-ender. It would have ended a whole studio that would have never made its money back,” he said. “So, I literally decided it was going to be the most expensive movie I ever directed, and I wasn’t ready to take that on.“

Other studios were interested, but constant delays kept pushing the project back, and Spielberg ultimately stepped away. At one point, Michael Bay was going to take over as director, but the feature film project remained in development hell.

Will Robopocalypse fare better as a TV series?
