If you thought you were exposed to too many animated movies over the year, just try being a member of the Academy’s Animation Branch who’s about to be bombarded with the record-breaking number of entries competing for this year’s top trophy. The number of feature animated movies submitted to compete for the Best Animated Feature prize at the Oscar is a record-breaking 32 this year, up from the 27 record entries of 2016, with heavy hitters including TOY STORY 4 and next month’s FROZEN II.

Also on this list are expected entries, like Universal/Illuminations SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2. Warner Bros’ THE LEGO MOVIE: THE SECOND PART and Dreamworks’ HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD. There are also plenty of lesser-known movies in the mix and will likely sneak into one of the five allotted nominee slots, such as Netflix’s I LOST MY BODY and Japan’s “Weathering with You.” Curiously, Genndy Tartakovsky's PRIMAL is on the list, despite the fact it was a five-episode series on Adult Swim. Perhaps it’s being compiled into a single, continuous feature and will screen as such for the mandated seven-day qualifying run in Los Angeles.

Of this list, the frontrunner at this point is Pixar’s mega-hit TOY STORY 4, which was met with about the same level of critical acclaim as the previous three. The third entry was even nominated for Best Picture when there were a guaranteed 10 nominees, but that doesn’t seem likely for the fourth entry. Other likely nominees are FROZEN II (the first won in 2014), and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3, the first two of which were also nominated in the category, but lost both times.

Last year INCREDIBLES 2 seemed the frontrunner for the longest time, all before SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE came out in the final weeks of the year and dominated the conversation and winning the top prize. There doesn't seem to be any other movie like that on the docket for the rest of the year, so look to TOY STORY 4, FROZEN II or HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON for the win. All five nominees will be announced with the other Oscar categories on January 13, 2020, and the Oscars are on February 9, 2020.
