Last week, A24 Films released a trailer for a mystery project that they simply called, "Untitled." While it seemed sci-fi in origin, the trailer just showed images of people in what looked to be deeply emotional situations. Thanks to the folks at The Film Stage who did some detective work, we now know that the trailer was for a 14-minute short film called TORU. Shot by Matt Mitchell and featuring a score by Brian McComber, the Japanese short film will make it's premiere at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.
The synopsis according to Wicked Local:
Toru centers on the story of a baby boy, Toru, born with a fatal lung condition. As he only has a few days to live, Toru’s parents sign him up for a trial experiment that would simulate a full life in a matter of days. The film follows Toru’s dream-like life simulation as a boy named Todd growing up in a New England suburb, and concludes in futuristic Japan.
As much as I really love what I'm hearing, I'm a little disappointed that this is just going to be a short film. That's a hell of a concept and I would love to see it fleshed out into a feature-length film. I actually wouldn't be too surprised if there are plans for a feature film version down the road, depending on the reception next week. We'll have to wait and see!
TORU will make it's premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
