Across the Spider-Verse writers promise more “insane” sequel

Across the Spider-Verse

Expectations are high for next year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but its writers are assuring fans that it will be more “insane” than the first.

Co-writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller recently sat down with The Wrap to discuss how Across the Spider-Verse will leave its own mark despite the massive success of the first movie. Lord said, “It’s definitely more insane…We finally made some people nervous. I feel like we’ve done our job.” Miller added, “The things that we’re doing in this new Spider-Verse movie are breaking the pipelines all over again. But everyone’s excited about it and not just terrified.”

Judging by Phil Lord previously saying Across the Spider-Verse will have six different animation styles (as opposed to Into the Spider-Verse’s single style), it is expected that the sequel will indeed offer more of a visual feast for fans. Adding to this, Christopher Miller said, “The whole idea of these movies is we’re showing you something you’ve never seen before. And if we just did a fun mild story that felt like the first movie, I think it would be a bit disappointing. You want to feel like you’re seeing visuals that you’ve never experienced before.”

Across the Spider-Verse will see Miles Morales (again voiced by Shameik Moore) teaming with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld, also returning) and various other Spider-People like Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Punk to take on The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). It is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson.

Into the Spider-Verse was one of the best-reviewed movies of 2018, even winning the Best Animated Feature honors at the Annie Awards, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, in addition to numerous others.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings to theaters on June 2nd, 2023. The third installment in the animated series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set for March 29th, 2024.
