Adam Scott is a funny dude. From STEP BROTHERS (“It’s the f*cking Catalina Wine Mixer!”) or his deadpan turn on PARTY DOWN or most recently PARKS AND RECREATION, Scott has had a solid career. He recently aired the hilarious short film “The Greatest Event in Television History” on Adult Swim alongside Paul Rudd and Jon Hamm, which had me laughing my ass off.
Scott recently formed his own production company with his wife Naomi called Gettin’ Rad Productions, a name he says is meant to be both funny and inspirational. “The Greatest Event” was their first effort which will be soon followed by an adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s DOWNTOWN OWL.
Klosterman is an essayist and reporter who has written the great books SEX, DRUGS, AND COCOA PUFFS, FARGO ROCK CITY, and EATING THE DINOSAUR. DOWNTOWN OWL was his first novel.
Plot: Somewhere in rural North Dakota, there is a fictional town called Owl. They don’t have cable. They don’t really have pop culture, but they do have grain prices and alcoholism. People work hard and then they die. But that’s not nearly as awful as it sounds; in fact, sometimes it’s perfect. Mitch Hrlicka lives in Owl. He plays high school football and worries about his weirdness, or lack thereof. Julia Rabia just moved to Owl. A history teacher, she gets free booze and falls in love with a self-loathing bison farmer. Widower and local conversationalist Horace Jones has resided in Owl for seventy-three years. They all know each other completely, except that they’ve never met. But when a deadly blizzard— based on an actual storm that occurred in 1984—hits the area, their lives are derailed in unex- pected and powerful ways.
No word on whether or not Scott will direct or star in the project, but it does seem to fit in with his comic sensibilities. It is about time we get some Klosterman writing on the big screen. I look forward to hearing more as this develops.
