Ah crap, Pirates 4 cracks the top ten highest grossing movies worldwide

What the hell people? You want them to keep making these movies forever? It seems so, as due to an extremely impressive, almost billion dollar worldwide draw, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES has just beat out HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS to become the tenth highest grossing movie ever. Seriously?

When examining the other films on the list, this should comes as less of the surprise, as the last two PIRATES films make an appearance, as does Depp’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND, another indicator of the public’s misguided affections. Here’s the whole rundown for those wondering.

1. AVATAR – $2.7B

2. TITANIC – $1.9B

3. LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING – $1.1B

4. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST – $1.066B

5. TOY STORY 3 – $1.063B

6. ALICE IN WONDERLAND – $1.02B

7. THE DARK KNIGHT – $1B

8. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE – $974M

9. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END – $963M

10. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES – $956M

Strangely, the original PIRATES is way down the list at #48, despite almost everyone agreeing it’s by far the best entry. Guess it was out of theaters before it had the chance to make a record-setting impression, but at the time, it still did infinitely better than anyone thought it would.

What is it about these movies, and in turn, Jack Sparrow? I thought the last one wasn’t horrible, but it just didn’t need to exist. Depp’s Sparrow is a great character, but after four films, the gag has kind of worn thin. But even if that’s the case, expect PIRATE 5 and 6 to be on the horizon without a doubt while the series can still command these kind of numbers.
