Alex Proyas turns up the AMP, a new sci-fi techno-thriller produced by Summit

Y’all a fan of Alex Proyas? You know…director of THE CROW, DARK CITY, KNOWING…yeah yeah…that guy!

Well, looks like the Egyptian born filmmaker (above) is partnering with Summit Entertainment to produce and possibly direct a sci-fi thriller set in the near-future. The project is called AMP, and sources from Daniel H. Wilson’s tome of the same title. Word is the two sides are currently hashing out screen rights to the book, which would be quite a coup for Wilson…who’ll see his ROBOPOCALYPSE adapted to the big screen by Steven Spielberg at some point in 2013.

But back to AMP. Wilson is apparently still writing the novel, and the plan is to hire a screenwriter to basically lift pages verbatim and incorporate them into the screenplay, a la Drew Goddard on ROBOPOCALYPSE. As far as the plot is concerned, AMP is set in a world where the technology designed to make the disabled whole, turns them into supermen.

With a logline as vague as that, how far the barometer swings toward horror or science-fiction is anyone’s guess. Even so, are you excited Proyas is tackling such a project? Does Summit’s track record worry you that the film may be a bit too teen-centric? What do you think?
