Amazon cancels Kevin after only one season, Aubrey Plaza responds to losing her adult animated series

Well, this sucks. According to Aubrey Plaza, Amazon canceled her adult animated comedy series Kevin after just one season. I’m not gutted, but a little pissed. I enjoyed Kevin a lot, even if it didn’t set the world on fire. Meanwhile, Plaza is understandably upset about the news, but wants to make sure she thanks everyone who tuned in and believed in the series.

Plaza responds to Kevin‘s cancellation

“Amazon Prime is not picking up ‘Kevin’ for another season,” Plaza wrote on Instagram. “Very disappointing since we were just getting going. I want to say thank you to all the fans that watched our show and all of the incredible cast and crew that worked so hard to make this dream come alive.”

“I remember on the early days of ‘Parks & Rec’ when we all thought we would be cancelled because our ratings weren’t great. Our numbers,” Plaza added. “But we had some special humans over at NBC that believed in the show and let us grow and let audiences fall in love with our characters. I was hoping for this for ‘Kevin’ but sadly we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday. Love you all very much. Meow.”

Kevin deserved better

Damn. The following quote comes from my review of the show for JoBlo. It’s almost like I saw this coming and didn’t want that feeling to play out. “I need people to get on board with Kevin, because while it works as a complete eight-episode season, I want more. The cast of characters is too good not to get more from them in future episodes. Wait until you meet the Conservative-leaning dog, Bear, the Acorns-Anonymous basket case squirrel, Glen, or Peter, the rat in a dog costume with a passion for theatrics. As I’d said, it’s an outstanding cast.”

I go on to say, Kevin is a brilliant addition to a flourishing era of adult animation. The animal-inspired comedy is laugh-out-loud funny and relatable, while the cast goes above and beyond to deliver show-stopping performances that will stay with you. If you’re an animal lover or pet owner, you owe it to yourself to experience this series, perhaps with an alcoholic beverage or sweet-smelling doob from the dispensary down the street.”

Maybe I’m out of touch (though, with this job, I’m not sure how I could be), but I never once saw any promotion for Kevin beyond a few articles and a billboard or two. How did Amazon expect this show to find its audience with so little (apparent) effort? Kevin deserved better. I hope it finds another home down the road.
