American Gods has had a troubled production since the very beginning, with members of both the cast and crew departing the series at various points, but Starz made the choice yesterday not to move forward with a fourth season of American Gods, effectively canceling the show. However, it may not be the end of the story, especially if Neil Gaiman has anything to say about it.
Based upon the novel by Neil Gaiman, American Gods followed Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) as he meets a strange man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) after being released from prison. Soon enough Shadow Moon becomes embroiled in a large-scale conflict between the Old Gods and the New Gods, who grow stronger each day. Gaiman took to Twitter to state that despite the cancellation, the series is definitely not dead.
Fremantle, the production company behind American Gods, is on the same page as Neil Gaiman, as they told Deadline that they're "committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe. With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story." Deadline says that two possibilities for continuing the series could lay with Netflix or Amazon, as Gaiman is developing a Sandman series with Netflix and Amazon has been the home of American Gods outside of America.
