American Honey’s Sasha Lane boards Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot

Hellboy Sasha Lane

Although I'm still more than a little disappointed that we won't get to see Guillermo del Toro complete his HELLBOY trilogy, I'm beginning to warm up to Neil Marshall's upcoming reboot of the Mike Mignola comic. I'm not completely sold just yet, but if Marshall really can succeed in giving us a "darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy," well, then I'd very much love to see what he can cook up. Casting for HELLBOY has been underway in preparation for a September shoot, and THR reports that Sasha Lane is the latest to join up.

The outlet reports that Lane, who starred in AMERICAN HONEY alongside Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough, is in final negotiations to join HELLBOY. The actress would play Alice Monaghan, a young woman who is rescued from the fairies who kidnapped her by Hellboy. She also retains some supernatural gifts due to her time spent with the fairies. HELLBOY also stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy, Ian McShane (American Gods) as Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm, and Milla Jovovich (RESIDENT EVIL) as the Blood Queen. The reboot will find Hellboy "squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind." According to a rumour by Splash Report yesterday, the other members of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D. for short) will include Abe Sapien and Major Ben Daimio.

Neil Marshall has stated that he's been "working very closely with Mike Mignola to keep it close to the origins of the characters, but also the world and that kind of thing," but added that he wants to give his remake a "stamp of its own" in order to set it apart from del Toro's movies. One of the ways which the director plans on doing that is to fully embrace Hellboy's bloody nature with an R-rating.

We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main thing. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.
