Emilia Clarke is finding her post-Game of Thrones days in projects like Marvel’s Secret Invasion Disney+ series and dramatic films like the upcoming McCarthy starring opposite Michael Shannon. The former Targaryen is now set to play Constance Lloyd in an upcoming film from Sophie Hyde. Constance Lloyd, in addition to being the wife of renowned author Oscar Wilde, was also a notable feminist activist who fought for women to progress their social attire out of archaic-fashioned dresses.
Variety reports that the film, titled An Ideal Wife, will focus on Lloyd. Although the plot for the film has yet to be revealed, Lloyd was married to author Oscar Wilde in 1884 and birthed two children with him. The activist took part in the women’s dress reform movement of the time, which called for women to be allowed to be dressed in less stifling Victorian-era clothing and more comfortable dresses. Lloyd would also be prisoned for two years for homosexuality as it was outlawed in England at the time. Later, Lloyd would take her children and move to Switzerland away from her husband, Oscar Wilde.
The film will be brought to us by Zephyr Films and Wheelhouse Productions, with Chris Curling and Matthew Gledhill producing the project. Director Sophie Hyde formally helmed Good Luck to You, Leo Grande starring Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, which premiered virtually at the Sundance Film Festival and screened at Berlinale. That film was distributed by Searchlight Films. Hyde also won Best Director at Sundance with her debut film, 52 Tuesdays, which also earned her a Crystal Bear prize at Berlin. Her follow-up, Animals, also would screen at Sundance and won an award for Best Debut Screenplay at the British Independent Film Awards.
The film is repped by Embankment Films and will be looking for an American distributor at the American Film Market, which will be kicking off on Tuesday. Meanwhile, you will be able to catch Clarke in Secret Invasion, which is set to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
