Animated prequel for Train to Busan: Peninsula on the way!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I've heaped praise on the Korean zombie flick TRAIN TO BUSAN before, and I'll do it again here. Animator Yeon Sang-ho's first live-action film did the impossible: it made me give a sh*t about zombies again, when my apathy for the genre couldn't be any more palatable. Even better, there was apparently an animated prequel – SEOUL STATION – that expanded the world of the film.

Now there's a sequel called PENINSULA on the way. Here's the official synopsis:

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

And, according to an interview with Polygon, it seems Yeon is working on an animated prequel for PENINSULA as well. Here's that excerpt:

We are currently in talks about making a cartoon about the relationship between Unit 631 and Min-jung. I am hopeful that the story can be further expanded upon through the less inhibited cartoon medium.

Sounds cool to me! I ashamedly wasn't even aware of SEOUL STATION – the animated prequel to TRAIN TO BUSAN – so I'm  definitely going to seek it out now to satiate my anticipation for the sequel PENINSULA, which is coming to the states August 21st.

So what do you guys think? Fans of TRAIN TO BUSAN? And if so, looking forward to the sequel and new animated prequel? Either way, sound off below!
