Animated The Witcher film will focus on Geralt’s mentor Vesemir

Earlier this month, Netflix announced that they were producing an anime film that would serve as a companion piece to their awesome hit series The Witcher. They said the film would be called THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF and will "take us back to a new threat facing the Continent." But apparently we shouldn't expect The Witcher's main character Geralt of Rivia to be the one dealing with this threat.

Netflix has put up a promotional / placeholder page for THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF that provided an official synopsis:

Long before mentoring Geralt, Vesemir begins his own journey as a witcher after the mysterious Deglan claims him through the Law of Surprise.

Geralt's mentor Vesemir made a vocal cameo in the last episode of The Witcher's first season; while dealing with a serious wound, Geralt imagines that he hears a voice say, "Geralt, I've been waiting for you." Geralt then says his mentor's name. That Vesemir line, credited as Young Vesemir, was delivered by Theo James… so perhaps James will be voicing the younger Vesemir in the anime as well.

The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has previously described Vesemir as "Fatherly. Wise. Sprightly (despite the fact that he's…) Ancient. Historian-and-keeper-of-secrets-and-tales-and-trials-of-the-disappearing-caste-of-witchers-who-must-face-the-fact-that-the-world-is-changing-outside-Kaer-Morhen's-walls-and-how-will-they-change-too?" But it doesn't sound like he'll be fatherly and ancient at the time of THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF.

The older Vesemir is the fencing instructor at the Witcher School of the Wolf, which is how he comes in contact with Geralt.

There's no word on when THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF will reach the Netflix streaming service. An eight episode second season of The Witcher is also in the works, and is expected to premiere sometime in 2021.
