Many of you were on board with the possible casting of Anthony Mackie back when we all though GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was going to be a Black Panther movie. He seemed to be an ideal candidate to play a superhero in the Marvel cinematic universe. Well, even though Black Panther is not coming soon, Mackie may be on his way to starring as a superhero even sooner.

Reports are coming in that Mackie is close to joining CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER as none other than Falcon. Falcon was one of the first mainstream African-American superheroes.

Falcon, aka Sam Wilson, was Harlem-based and had many street adventures with Cap in the 1970s comics when he served as his partner. He derives his powers from a suit which allows him to fly and enhances his strength. He can also telepathically talk to birds. In current comics, Falcon is a key player in many of Cap’s espionage adventures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER seems to be following the storyline where Cap’s first sidekick Bucky (played by Sebastian Stan in THE FIRST AVENGER) is presumed dead but instead is brainwashed into become a covert agent for the Russians. After battling Captain America, he does regain his memory and become a hero, but one could assume he will remain an antagonist for the length of the movie.

I love the casting of Mackie and hope it comes to fruition. I do wonder if Falcon will serve more as a codename for Sam Wilson in the same way as Hawkeye and Black Widow did in THE AVENGERS. Flying would work well on the big screen but who knows how cheesy communicating with birds would play.

What do you think of the Mackie news?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is slated to open in theaters on April 4, 2014.
