Are the Coen Bros. about to delve into full blown horror?

If you’re familiar with the work of Joel and Ethan Coen, you know the boys can get pretty dark when they want to. BLOOD SIMPLE, their first feature, is in its heart a film noir, but the movie plays out in horror movie fashion; BARTON FINK has an extremely surreal and ghastly finale, and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN has a sinister villain scary enough to make Hannibal Lecter piss his pants. With all that noted, these guys with a flair for the demented still have never dipped their toes into the out-and-out horror pond. But perhaps they might in the near future…

Empire Magazine asked Ethan Coen if he and his bro would ever consider jumping into our favorite of all genres – and got a rather encouraging reply:

“Funny you should ask, yes, we’re working on a couple of scripts now, one of which it would be fair to call a full-on horror movie. Frances McDormand is the monster.”

While the reference to longtime Coen Bros. collaborator – and Joel’s spouse – Frances McDormand was made with tongue in cheek, the other part evidently wasn’t – at least, not as far as Empire was concerned. Are we going to see the Coens get darker and nastier than they’ve ever been before? Lord, I hope so…

Weigh in below and tell us what you make of this…
