In the mid-nineties, star Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven were riding high. Arnold was arguably the world's biggest star at the time, while he had one of his biggest hits ever teaming with Verhoeven on the classic TOTAL RECALL, which was produced by Carolco Pictures. The two then pitched the studio on doing a massive, big-budget epic about the Crusades, appropriately titled, CRUSADE, which got so far into pre-production that the cast, which would include Jennifer Connelly, Gary Sinise, and John Turturro, was set.
