Ava DuVernay closing deal to helm The New Gods for Warner Bros

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Warner Bros.' DC Universe continues to expand as Deadline has reported that Ava DuVernay (A WRINKLE IN TIME) is currently closing a deal with the studio to direct an adaptation of "The New Gods," the creation of the late, great Jack Kirby.

As I'm not overly familiar with Jack Kirby's Fourth World, I'll have to turn to good ol' Wikipedia to fill in the blanks, which tells me that "The New Gods are natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips." Filled with unspoiled forests, mountains, and rivers, the idyllic New Genesis is ruled by the Highfather, while the nightmarish Apokolips is a polluted and ruined dystopia filled with fire pits and machinery ruled over by the tyrant Darkseid. Both New Genesis and Apokolips were once part of the same world, but it was split apart a millennia ago during Ragnarök. There are certainly plenty of new characters for Ava DuVernay to play around with, including Big Barda, Mister Miracle, and Orion, and it also gives Warner Bros. the chance to venture outside of our world and explore more realms of the DC Universe. It'd also be a treat to see Kirby's distinctive style brought to life as closely as possible, if anything, it would certainly make the film stand out from its DC brethren. The studio is currently searching for a screenwriter who will work closely with DuVernay in order to craft THE NEW GODS, and it's also noted that the film will have "no connection" with the other films in the DC Universe.

What do you folks think of Ava DuVernay taking the helm of THE NEW GODS?
