Ben Wheatley’s A Field In England to get groundbreaking wide release in UK

One director whose work we like to keep a close eye on is Ben Wheatley, the man behind the brilliant KILL LIST and the upcoming SIGHTSEERS. His latest film A FIELD IN ENGLAND, which we last covered HERE when it garnered UK distribution, is getting a groundbreaking simultaneous release in the UK, becoming the first UK film released simultaneously in cinemas, on DVD, free TV and VoD, according to Screen Daily. Yes, you read that correctly – A FIELD IN ENGLAND will be released in theaters, on DVD and VOD, as well as hitting free TV, all on the same day. Unprecedented? Sure. Crazy? Probably. But come on…it's a Ben Wheatley film! Everyone should be seeing that shite!

Film4, Picturehouse Entertainment, 4DVD, Film4 Channel and the BFI Distribution Fund are partnering on the day-and-date release, which will take place on Friday, July 5. A digital masterclass designed to immerse audiences in the making of the film will also launch around release, developed by Film4.0 in partnership with the filmmakers.

The English Civil War-set film stars Michael Smiley (KILL LIST), Peter Ferdinando (TONY), Reece Shearsmith (THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN), Julian Barratt (THE MIGHTY BOOSH), Richard Glover (SIGHTSEERS) and Ryan Pope.

Written by Amy Jump and produced by Claire Jones and Andy Starke at Rook Films, the film is set during the English Civil War of the mid-17th century and follows a small group of deserters fleeing from a raging battle who become caught up in a hunt for treasure.

While crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure they seek might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped in the field.

Now if they'd just set a North American release date…

We'll keep you updated on A FIELD IN ENGLAND as the news comes our way.
