Bitter Root: Regina King to direct monster hunter comic book adaptation

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

After decades of earning accolades and awards for her acting, Regina King recently made her feature directorial debut with the Oscar-nominated film One Night in Miami. It was clear she was set to become an "in demand" filmmaker, and The Hollywood Reporter suggested that she could even be in the running to direct the "Black Superman" project for DC and Warner Bros. and/or the Blade reboot for Marvel and Disney. But it looks like she might have taken herself out of the running for those comic book adaptations, as she has signed on to direct a different comic book movie: Legendary Entertainment's Bitter Root.

Based on the Image Comics series created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown, the story of Bitter Root is set

during the vibrant Harlem Renaissance of 1924, when a fractured family of once-great monster hunters faces an unimaginable evil that descends upon New York City. For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off the prejudice of the era, transforming human beings into hideous monsters. With most of the family dead, and the surviving Sangeryes at odds between saving or killing the creatures, they must overcome the wounds of the past in the hopes of thwarting an invasion.

Bryan Edward Hill is currently working on the screenplay.

Regina King and Reina King will be producing the film through their Royal Ties banner, alongside Proximity Media's Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Ryan Coogler (director of Black Panther).

I haven't read Bitter Root yet, but I think it's very cool that King is taking on a project like this and I look forward to checking it out.
