The Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced today, and a couple of trippy thrillers got some love. BLACK SWAN is no surprise because it’s supposed to kick seven different kinds of ass… but THE LAST EXORCISM? Didn’t see that one coming… (Maybe Eli should lay out his tux for Oscar night.)

Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN nabbed three crucial nods: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress, Natalie Portman. Solid. Meanwhile, THE LAST EXORCISM got recognized in the Best First Feature (Daniel Stamm) category and, perhaps even more surprisingly, Best Supporting Actress for Ashley Bell. I still haven’t seen this flick, but I’ve heard from just about everyone that Bell really does kill it, so perhaps this isn’t such a shocker after all.

WINTER’S BONE, which won big at Sundance, led the pack with seven nominations (including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Lead Actress, Jennifer Lawrence). You can peep the trailer and a bunch of stills from the critically acclaimed film right HERE. This one will most likely be an Oscar contender as well, so keep an eye on it.
