Along with the Coen’s TRUE GRIT, I’m not sure there’s another flick outside Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN I want to see more this year. Given that info, you can imagine how amped we are that a new viral website for the latter joint has been erected, one that wishes “I Just Want To Be Perfect.”
As you’d expect from site for an Aronofsky film, this shite’s pretty trippy. You’ll find an eerie score from Clint Mansell, as well as a few off-putting slow-mo images. The subjects themselves are fairly innocuous: Natalie Portman’s dangling feet, she performing a f*ckin’ plie in the dark, her fingernails getting sheared, etc. Yet the way Aronofsky films such subjects, you can tell this is going to be one truly bizarre ride. Can’t f*ckin’ wait!
Opening wide December 1st, BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice.
But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.
Ksenia Solo, Sebastian Stan, Janet Montgomery, Toby Hemingway, Christopher Gartin, Kristina Anapau, Marcia Jean Kurtz and Deborah Offner also add to the impressive player list.
