On Saturday at New York City Comic Con, a new trailer for Blade Runner 2099 debuted, giving fans of Ridley Scott’s timeless sci-fi franchise a taste of the Replicant madness to come. The new eight-episode limited series, created by Silka Luisa, hails from Amazon MGM Studios and the Alcon Television Group, with Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Wicked, The Brothers Sun) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, Mother Mary, Cuckoo) leading the cast.
A Reborn Los Angeles and a New Generation of Blade Runners
Set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora (Hunter Schafer), a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), a Replicant days from death, she hunts down a runaway who hides a truth that could collapse a fragile city.
The Visionaries Behind the Series
Luisa, Yeoh, and Schafer took the stage at Prime Video’s NYCC panel on Saturday, along with cast members Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, and Matthew Needham, as well as executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
The series also stars Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi.
A Future Beyond Humanity
Earlier this year, at San Diego Comic-Con, Luisa said one of the things that always resonated with her about the original film was its portrayal of the replicants, explaining that she found herself rooting for them rather than the humans.
“It may not be humans who teach us what being human is,” Luisa remarked.
Luisa then explained that Blade Runner 2099 explores what happens after the world hinted at in Blade Runner 2049, imagining a future in which replicants have become the dominant species. Humanity is no longer at the top of the food chain.
“So much of what Blade Runner promised is just around the corner,” she said. “What happens when our time ends? What happens when we are no longer the dominant species?”
Rather than focusing on the conflict itself, Luisa revealed that she had imagined a major war between humans and replicants had already occurred. The series examines the aftermath of that conflict and the world left behind.
