When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, they singled out a few select characters from the DCEU who could make the leap to the DCU. One of those characters was Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle, and he will be making his return in Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

Blue Beetle in the DCU?

Maridueña played Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who is granted superpowers by an ancient alien relic known as the Scarab. Although the film received largely positive reviews, it underperformed at the box office. But by that point, the DCEU was already done.

Gunn has previously said that, like Peacemaker, Blue Beetle fits “very nicely” into the DCU. “Peacemaker was always in a weird place. People say he’s a part of the DCEU, but he wasn’t really,” Gunn said. “He was a part of this in-between universe of DC when there was nobody really making sure everything was connected, and at a time when they were going to rewrite everything with The Flash. We were kind of able to do whatever we wanted. We had that brash ending which I loved. It was one of my favorite things in the whole season, but it just didn’t fit in with the DCU.

Man of Tomorrow

In the film, Superman and Luthor are forced to team up to face a bigger threat, the superintelligent Brainiac.

David Corenswet is back as Superman alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger is set to play Brainiac, which I’m pretty excited about, and Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will make an appearance as John Stewart. Also expected to return are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Adria Arjona is also part of the cast and is believed to be playing Maxima, but that hasn’t been confirmed, leaving many fans hoping she will actually be playing Wonder Woman. Milly Alcock will also be returning as Supergirl. The film is set to be released on July 9, 2027.
