Box Office Predictions: How high will Devil Wears Prada 2 open?

Chris

This weekend sees the release of one of the more anticipated non-genre sequels of the year — The Devil Wears Prada 2. Overall, it’s been well received, if perhaps somewhat cooler than the original (we liked it), but one thing is certain — it’s going to dominate the box office this weekend. However, the question of how much it will make is very much up in the air.

Some forecasters believe it has a shot at $100 million. I’m not sure I buy that. While there’s no doubt the sequel will do very well, it’s also targeting an older, adult audience — and one that doesn’t necessarily rush out to see movies on opening weekend.

It also has a lot of competition for older viewers from Michael, which came close to breaking $100 million last weekend. I’m thinking The Devil Wears Prada 2 will make about $70 million, while Michael, in week two, should do about $55 million — although it’s possible both movies will greatly outperform my expectations.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie should keep chugging along with about $10 million, allowing it to become even more of a domestic juggernaut than it’s been up to now. Another huge domestic hit, Project Hail Mary, shouldn’t be far behind with about $8 million.

The only other newcomer in the top five I see is Animal Farm, which comes from Angel Studios. Andy Serkis’s adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel has been controversial (our critic really liked it), but Angel always does a good job marketing their movies, and the cast has been working overtime selling it. I expect it to round out the top five with about $6 million.

Here are our predictions:

  1. Devil Wears Prada 2: $70 million
  2. Michael: $55 million
  3. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: $10 million
  4. Project Hail Mary: $8 million
  5. Animal Farm: $6 million
