Box Office Update: Ant-Man takes a tumble while Cocaine Bear over performs

Numbers have begun rolling in for this last weekend of February and, well, there is no burying the lead here: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently on pace to have a horrific drop off of over 70% and land around $30 million for its second weekend. If that percent holds true, it would be the worst second week decline in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, beating out the 67.8% drop of Black Widow and the 67.7% drop of last years Thor: Love and Thunder. I guess even with a decent 83% audience score, the bad reviews and B cinemascore have convinced audiences to wait this one out for its eventual Disney+ debut. I will give a full run down on my thoughts on this apparent horrific second weekend in tomorrow’s full run down of this weekend’s box office, but it seems audiences are actually starting to get a bit of that Superhero Fatigue that Kevin Feige doesn’t believe exists. 

There is of course some good news to report this weekend and that is that the quite excellent Cocaine Bear is coming in far ahead of predictions with what looks to be a $20 million weekend after a solid $2 million in Thursday previews. Tracking had this one sitting in the low teens, but I thought the film could get a bit higher if it had solid reviews, and they have been pretty good! Our own Chris Bumbray gave the film a 7/10 and I will go one better and say, for me, this one will probably make it on my top ten list at the end of the year. It is exactly what you’d expect it to be from the title, but then you add the hilarious direction by Elizabeth Banks who has proven herself a comedic force in films such as The 40-Year-Old-Virgin and you have a film in Cocaine Bear that is just insanely fun to watch. Which is a bit weird saying as the film is all about innocent people getting mercilessly slaughtered by a bear that likes to party! 

It looks like the audiences came out to support the latest faith based film as Jesus Revolution looks to come in ahead of expectations with around $13 million for the weekend. The film currently has a 99% Audience score which means of that $13 million in ticket sales, $12,999,990 worth of people liked it. As I said in my predictions, these faith based films aren’t for me, but it is good to see people going to the theater to support a film they believe in. 

Fourth and fifth place look to be your mega sequels Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with around $4 million each. Also of note this week, A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks officially crossed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office which counts as a huge win for the film as since the Pandemic began over three years ago, adult targeted films have struggled to make a dent at the box office, but if anyone could do it, it would be Tom Hanks!
