Last week we relayed a tweet from Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller who claimed FRIDAY THE 13TH 2 was “dead.” Not only did said assertion draw overwhelming response from you, the readers, it also made little sense. After all, 2009’s FRIDAY THE 13TH refitting was one of the highest grossing horror flicks of all time. You’d think, like back in the 80s, a sequel would have been churned out in a mere 6 months. Well, such is obviously not the case, and Mr. Fuller kindly caught up with his Bloody-D crew and offered some pearls. Shuck them shites below!
From Fuller’s own lips:
“Right now, it’s not happening…nothing’s happening on it, (but) for a movie like that, the door is always open. Obviously, we’d really love to go back to Crystal Lake, and we’ve been very lucky our last two films working with Jackie Earle Haley and Derek Mears (the new Voorhees). And being able to go back-to-back between those guys, and then go back to Derek, I would love that.”
Fuller presses on:
“You know, it doesn’t feel to me like – and this isn’t specific to any studio – it doesn’t feel to me like studios are making horror movies in the same way they were making them three or four years ago where every studio had a couple of horror movies in production or they were prepping. I think if you look at the calendar for this year, there’s probably four or five horror movies, and then they’re all either remakes or sequels to something else. So it just doesn’t feel like there’s the same appetite at the studio level. And we’ll see how the appetite is at the audience level when NIGHTMARE comes out.”
Wow. That’s new to me. I thought studios loved the economic model horror flicks inherently offer. SAW movies for instance, costs what, $10-12 million to produce? Then open every year to a $20 million weekend? Not to mention the foreign sales and always bankable DVD take. The remakes and sequels bit I understand, but Platinum Dunes is an unabashed remake company, so to grouse about studios favoring remakes doesn’t seem to jive. Again, just as FREDDY VS. JASON, a highly profitable picture, never capitalized on a sequel, it looks like FIRDAY THE 13TH 2 is getting the same treatment and placed on definite hold. Doesn’t make much sense to me. And not much dollars for P.D.
