Brie Larson reveals why she failed her audition for Terminator: Genisys

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Brie Larson has used her new YouTube channel to discuss a variety of topics but some of the more interesting stories have been about the roles she has missed out on. When she started her channel, she casually admitted that she auditioned for but failed to get roles in THE HUNGER GAMES, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY and TERMINATOR: GENISYS. Larson hasn't given much info as to what went wrong with those auditions in the past but she's offering up some clarity about her audition for GENISYS and she lost out on the Sarah Connor role that ultimately went to Emilia Clarke.

Previously admitting that she got a flat tire on her way to her TERMINATOR: GENISYS audition, Larson shed some more light on what happened with the movie, and it apparently comes down to the perception that the actress cannot hold a gun properly:

"I did my audition. A couple days later, I found out that I didn't get it, and I got no feedback whatsoever. I felt like I did a really good job. I didn't understand, and then months later, my manager called, and was like, 'Listen. We got the feedback, finally, and what it was, was they said that they didn't think that you know how to carry a gun."

Larson expressed confusion about the gun statement considering that she didn't even carry a gun in the audition which made their reasoning not make much sense to her at all. However, at the end of the day, she seems happy that she ended up not landing the role in the film. Larson says "I mean, I'm grateful, because I don't want to hold a gun in a movie. I just thought it was funny that in their head, they thought I couldn't hold a gun, so I didn't get the job."

Larson should also be happy that the role passed her by because TERMINATOR:  GENISYS wasn't met with the greatest response from moviegoers or critics. The film has a very rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes of 27% and while its overseas box office take did put a band-aid on some of the bleeding, its $89.7 million domestic take on a $155 million budget made it the lowest-grossing TERMINATOR film in the states at the time. That title was taken by the next installment, TERMINATOR: DARK FATE, which stalled at $62.2 million on a $185 million budget.

As we know now, the role of Sarah Connor ultimately went to Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. While Larson doesn't specifically state the role she auditioned for in the video, it can be presumed that it was for Sarah. Alongside other lead actors Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Jai Courtney, and J. K. Simmons, Clarke plays the only female character in a major role that happens to also tote a gun. Also, when the movie was in pre-production in 2013, it had been reported that Larson was testing for the role alongside Clarke.

Larson mentioned a slew of roles that got away in the new video including parts on projects like Gossip Girl, TOMORROWLAND, THE HUNGER GAMES, and SPY KIDS. She even missed out a role on The Big Bang Theory because she was a bit too young for the role at the time. It all worked out for Larson in the end as she has an Academy Award for Best Actress for her amazing turn in ROOM and she's one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy in the MCU via CAPTAIN MARVEL and AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Those missed opportunities just led to even bigger ones.
