If you’re still wondering how a guy with a strict animation background landed the job of directing the exploits of notorious bounty hunter JONAH HEX, the project’s purported star Josh Brolin is willing to explain how it happened. Not really why, but how.
Collider caught up with Brolin, who discussed HORTON HEARS A WHO director Jimmy Hayward’s path to the gig: “I just think that Jimmy is truly brilliant,” Brolin proclaims. “He got an e-mail to me somehow, someway. He wasn’t somebody we were even beginning to look at and I read the e-mail and was completely blown away by it. I had to meet the guy.”
You might think the email said something like “I have numerous photos of Diane Lane in an array of compromising positions, including but not limited to piledriver, chili dog and monkeywrench.” But no, there’s more to it, as Brolin explains: “I ended up meeting the guy and I think he’s so far beyond most of us in his expertise and his filmic abilities. It was one of those things where I brought him to the studio and I said, ‘I think this is the guy. I don’t know why.’ But I think he’s a brilliant, brilliant filmmaker. I can’t wait to see what he does. So I don’t know how to answer your question, but I can’t wait to see what he does.“
Just to remind you, HEX adapts DC Comics’ long-running series about a scar-faced gunslinger. CRANK directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor recently exited the Warner Bros. project, while Brolin obviously stuck around.
