Bud Cort, best known for starring as Harold Chasen opposite Ruth Gordon’s Maude Chardin in Harold and Maude, is dead at the age of 77. According to reports, Cort died in Connecticut after a long illness. His friend, Dorian Hannaway, confirmed the actor’s death.
Harold and Maude Was a Blessing and a Curse
After appearing in a small role in M*A*S*H, Cort made a strong impression on director Robert Altman, who soon cast the young actor in the title role of Brewster McCloud, playing a reclusive dreamer determined to build wings that would allow him to fly like a bird.
However, it was his deeply unconventional performance in Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude that truly defined his career. Cort played a death-obsessed young man who forms a profound friendship—and eventually a romantic bond—with the free-spirited 79-year-old Maude, who teaches him to embrace life. Although the film is now widely regarded as a classic, it was both a critical and commercial disappointment upon its release in 1971. Cort, however, always believed in its lasting impact.
“As I was reading the script I immediately knew it was going to be a classic film for the ages,” he told TrainWreck’d Society. “There was no denying it. The studio was stumped on how to publicize it. The art for newspapers and theater posters was plain black, block lettering on an empty background it was more appropriate for The Ten Commandments! Truthfully, it’s success came from the people. The ground swell of word of mouth dropkicked it over so many goalposts both here and abroad- that Paramount had to re-release it.“
Despite the film’s eventual legacy, Cort later described the experience as complicated, calling it both a blessing and a curse. “I was typecast to the point where I didn’t make a film for five years after Harold and Maude,” Cort said. “I’ve had my moment where I just cursed that movie and wished I’d never done it.“
He was offered a role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest but ultimately declined, explaining that he “didn’t want to play crazy. I fought certain opportunities off because I wasn’t ready to be a brand name. In retrospect, I should have done everything.“

Over the decades, Cort built a wide-ranging career across film and television, appearing in movies such as Love Letters, Electric Dreams, Invaders from Mars, Brain Dead, Heat, Dogma, But I’m a Cheerleader, Coyote Ugly, Pollock, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Number 23, among many others. His television credits included appearances on Columbo, The Twilight Zone, Arrested Development, Ugly Betty, and Criminal Minds, as well as voice work on several animated series, such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, and more.
