Captain Marvel EP issues a statement to review trolls about their efforts

Before CAPTAIN MARVEL went nova in theaters this past March, the film was a victim of review bombings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. In short, before the Brie Larson-starrer superhero-landed on the big screen, MCU fans opposed to the movie's existence posted a deluge of negative reviews in an attempt to sabotage the project's release. Baseless complaints about the film stemmed mostly from MRA activists, claiming that the film's strong femenist messaging was an afront to their fragile sensitivites. In time, the trolls soon discovered that their efforts were all for nought, as the film directed by both Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck went on to gross $1.1 billion dollars worldwide.

Recently, as a way of promoting the film's home release, Marvel Studios EVP of Production and Producer Victoria Alonso participated in a Reddit AMA. In the process of fielding questions from fans, one commenter asked Alonso if the project's pre-release negativity resulted in any changes being made to the film during its production.

Alonso then politely responded by saying:

"First of all I share with you the pride you feel for the film," Alonso answered. "I love this film with all my heart. We were aware that there were people that were not ready or perhaps not welcoming of the film but it never interfered with the story line or our vision of the film. When you make stories that could potentially touch an international audience, there will always be a portion of the audience that does not 100% love it. But we hope they give us a chance and see the film before they finalize their opinions. There is something for everyone in our films, even if you're a little reluctant to watch."

Would you look at that restraint? Good on you, Victoria, as I'm sure that unleashing on the subject would have felt quite liberating.

Despite their best/worst efforts, CAPTAIN MARVEL went on to perform like gangbusters in cinemas, and from what I've heard its also making a mint in home release sales. So who's smiling now? I'll tell you. It's Marvel, Brie Larson, and everyone else who believed in the film from day one. The fact of the matter is that we're entering a new era of the MCU and we need characters to lead the charge. While some people might not care for Carol Danvers, she's demonstrated that she's more than qualified to stand alongside other MCU greats. Plus, she makes that paper. If you think Marvel is going to sideline her just because the vocal minority are against her position of power, you've got no clue as to how this stuff works.

Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls.
